Huawei has announced a licensing agreement with a Volkswagen Group supplier.

The agreement includes a licence to use Huawei’s essential patents for the 4G standard (SEP) in Volkswagen vehicles equipped with wireless communication modules. The licensing agreement is the largest deal of its kind in the automotive sector for Huawei.

Song Liuping, Huawei’s director of legal affairs, said, “As an innovative company, Huawei holds the largest patent portfolio in wireless technology. It represents great value to the automotive industry. And we are pleased that key players in this field recognise this value. We believe this license will benefit consumers around the world by giving them access to our advanced technology.

Huawei expects that under the current licensing agreement, the company’s patent technologies will be deployed in more than 30 million vehicles.

Over the past 20 years, Huawei has entered into more than 100 patent licensing agreements with the world’s largest companies in Europe, the US, Japan and South Korea. Huawei will continue to deploy digital connectivity technologies in more and more vehicles to create a fully connected smart world.
